Having followed his college girlfriend Marcy out to California's Wine Country for the summer, Sherman is sucker-punched with a triple blow upon his arrival: Marcy dumps him for a more exciting guy; he loses his credit-card and cash-filled wallet; and his domineering mother cuts him off financially for disobeying and leaving Manhattan.Desperate, and despite having never gotten his manicured nails dirty before, Sherman agrees to help Palmer restore a classic Roadster in exchange for the drive down the coast to Southern California. With the aid of Palmer's best friend, DJ, a gun-toting gourmet chef who lives in a lakeside Airstream trailer, the trio is set to finish the car on schedule -- provided Palmer is sincere in his desire to complete this would-be gift for his estranged son.As they make their way through gallons of engine grease, Bondo and paint over the course of a week, Palmer and DJ introduce Sherman to not only the world of car restoration, but also fishing, swimming and the fine art of picking up women. When Sherman's romantic encounter with Addy, a free-spirited local artist, gets him questioning his career choice he is sent careening off the carefully delineated path for the first time in his life.The deadline to head south approaches and with it the certainty that Palmer intends to finish the car and Sherman must decide, for the first time in his life, to do what's right, not just what's most beneficial to himself.
